Residency Curriculum

PGY-II | First Year Residents

First-year residents are given a series of introductory lectures prior to commencing clinical duties. First-year residents spend the year acquiring skills in general eye care, with balanced exposure to sub-specialty services. First-year residents commence duties as primary surgeon in Pediatric and Oculoplastic cases and as assistants on a wide variety of other surgical procedures. Additionally, first-year residents begin a step-wise introduction to cataract surgery during their NorthShore rotations and are expected to complete significant cataract simulation and wet/dry lab training during the PGY-2 year.

First and second-year residents share primary call and are backed up by the senior resident. In the second 6 months of the year, PGY-2 residents cover the inpatient/consult service at the University of Chicago, which includes the Bernard Mitchell Adult Hospital, Comer Children’s Hospital and the Center for Care and Discovery

The six-rotation blocks, which last two months each, are:

  1. Comp/Retina/Glaucoma
  2. Peds/Neuro
  3. NorthShore 1
  4. Oculoplastics
  5. Consult
  6. NorthShore 2

PGY-III | Second Year Residents

Second-year ophthalmology residents assume increasing responsibility in clinics and the operating room and supervise first-year residents in clinics. They cover the inpatient/consult service at the University of Chicago during the first six months of the academic year. Second-year residents gain significant primary cataract surgery experience during their comprehensive rotations at both The University of Chicago and NorthShore Health System, in addition to additional laboratory and simulation requirements. First and second-year residents share primary call and are backed up by the senior resident. The six-rotation blocks, which last two months each, are:
