Clinical Associate Birva Shah, OD is a part-time pediatric optometrist at the University of Chicago Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science. Dr. Shah first came to the University of Chicago as a fourth-year student participating in an externship. At U of C, she was “astounded by the quality of patient care, the complex cases that came in, and the great doctors I was able to work with.” When the opportunity came to work at the University after completing her optometric training at the Illinois College of Optometry, she says that she “did not hesitate” to join our team.
Friendly and always pleasant, we agree with Dr. Shah when she states that the subspecialty of pediatrics fits her personality best. She explains, “When treating a child, you also get to actually treat the entire family.” When asked what her favorite part of her job is, she answers, “Knowing you are doing something that is making a difference in people’s lives.”
Where can you be found on the weekends? “I enjoy spending time with friends/family, I’m an avid traveler, I love biking/running, and I’m a foodie at heart!”
What are some of your most significant accomplishments to date? “Publishing an article in a journal, giving lectures in the community, starting an externship site to other fourth-year students, and being involved with PEDIG (Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group) research.”
Any final thoughts? “Both optometry/ophthalmology are a rewarding and fulfilling career. Developments in vision care mean that the role of an optometrist/ophthalmologist is constantly expanding, bringing with it opportunities to specialize and develop your career to suit your particular interests.”
