Department Guiding Principles

The core mission of the department is to provide exceptional eye care for our patients and the community. We are a tight-knit group of doctors, parents, friends, and colleagues. We see ourselves as one big family and treat patients as if they were our own. With any group of diverse individuals, it is important to have a high level of respect and compassion for each other, and we extend that to our patients when delivering care. We want every person who walks into our clinic to feel at home, as with the sort of warmth and inclusiveness that one expects from their loved ones. This drives our character and actions each day.

Teamwork allows each person to specialize and take advantage of his or her individual strengths for the betterment of the community. As part of a comprehensive hospital system, we have an amazing network of talented people that each have something great to offer our patients. Our team supports each other and makes working here very enjoyable and meaningful.

Our primary goal is to provide rich educational and growth opportunities for all our staff, from the faculty to the residents and fellows. As part of a premier research institution, education and research are fundamental aspects of our culture and daily life. Most of our faculty actively engages in clinical research and works diligently to understand and overcome medical challenges of eyecare today. We love to teach and inspire others to study and follow their passions.

As doctors, we took a sacred oath long ago to uphold the highest degree of professionalism and ethics. To honor our profession, the University, and the medical center we represent, we follow strict medical standards to protect our patient's health, safety, and trust. Our integrity has allowed us to successfully serve Chicago for over 100 years.
